Our History

Converted by the family who operate Battlers Green Farm, and founded by Argentinian couple, Peter & Carmen Welford, The Bull Pen first opened its doors on 8th September 1993.

Instantly popular with locals, the restaurant has been extended throughout the years to seat over 120 people, with the addition of the glass fronted atrium and covered terrace in 2018.

Retaining some of its original features, like the fireplace, built by Tom Haworth, father of Paul, The Bull Pen continues to delight customers, some of whom have been frequent visitors since we first opened.

In 2026, The Bull Pen underwent a significant interior refurbishment and introduced a brand new menu, designed by our Head Chef, Abbie. Our ongoing aim is to provide fresh, tasty and seasonal dishes made with the highest quality ingredients, delivered by our friendly and dedicated team.

Why 'The Bull Pen?'

As you may have guessed, our restaurant takes its name from the building, which was originally used as a pen for the farm’s bull, built in the early 1900s.

Over the years, Battlers Green Farm has been home to many bulls, from Burteen Suzadema III, a Canadian Holstein, to Atlas, pictured here outside what is now our covered terrace area.
